Book Marketing Pep Talk: But WHY Do You Need an Author Website?

Spoiler: It’s not just because a checklist told you so!
I’m happy to say there’s been a noticeable shift in author communities over the past few years. I rarely hear debates now about whether you need an author website. These days, more writers are reaching out before their book is released—sometimes even before it's finished—to request a polished and professional website. That’s progress!
But here's the rub: while many authors now accept that a website is part of the process, I get the impression that some don’t understand why it matters—or, crucially, how they plan to use it.
Too many lovely writers are still booking complimentary consultations with me simply because they saw “launch website” on a very long list of things to do before publishing. It’s a line item. A box to check. Something they’ve been told they “should” do.
And that’s a problem.
Because—deep breath—your author website won’t do much for you unless you use it.
You can’t just hit “publish” on a shiny new website and expect to sell a truckload of books. It doesn't work that way. A website isn’t magic. But it is a powerful tool—when you understand what you’re building, and why.
Start With the Big Picture
Before you choose colors, photos, or fonts, it helps to pause and reflect on some foundational questions:
What are your overall goals for your writing?
What kind of author are you—or hope to become?
Where are you in the publishing process?
Do you know which types of book marketing might energize you… and which ones make you want to run and hide?
How confident are you with technology?
Do you have help (paid or unpaid) with marketing or admin tasks?
Are you comfortable being visible online, or do you struggle with “putting yourself out there”?
There’s no shame in not having these answers yet. But taking time to explore them can help you build a website that truly supports your goals—your goals, not someone else’s generic checklist.

Your Author Website Can (and Should) Work for You
Once you’ve clarified what you’re aiming for, you can decide how your website fits into the bigger picture. Here are just a few of the ways an author website can serve you:
A polished author brand presence
At the very least, your site can act as your online home: a place you control, where readers, media, or potential collaborators can learn more about who you are and what you write.A book marketing tool you actually use
Your website can host your email list signups, showcase your books, offer downloadable extras, share blog posts or event info, streamline your advance reader campaign, and even act as the hub for a virtual book tour. But only if you use those features strategically.A platform for long-term career growth
If you envision speaking, teaching, consulting, or writing multiple books, your site can grow with you. It can help you position yourself not just as a writer, but as an expert, a thought leader, or a community builder.A confidence booster
Believe it or not, having a professional website that truly reflects you will boost your morale. It helps you feel more legitimate—and makes it easier to say “I’m an author” out loud (and online).

There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Advice
Some authors love writing newsletters. Others would rather clean the oven than post on Instagram. Some are in it for one powerful memoir; others dream of building an entire book-based business. Some have the time and skills to DIY everything; others need help knowing what to do next.
That’s why your author website—and your whole approach to book marketing—should fit you.
Not every feature is right for every author. Not every strategy suits every personality. And not every tool is worth your time or money.
Let’s talk about your author website needs
If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, let’s chat.
Whether your book is nearly done or just a glimmer in your eye, I offer a complimentary conversation to discuss your goals, your next steps, and whether working together makes sense.
To dive deeper, I’ll often then recommend an Author Website Clarity Call, but most of my clients like to start with that free chat, first.
A website can absolutely be a game-changer for your author journey—but only if it’s built with purpose.
