Behind the Book with Jasper Cove
I’m delighted today to take you behind the scenes with my client Jasper Cove of Rewire Fear.
Jasper’s memoir, Through the Shadow of Fear: Breaking Free from Religious Trauma, was published earlier this month and I’m grateful to him for making time to tell us more about the context of this heartfelt book, and his writing process.
The memoir also underpins Jasper’s goal of helping others; next week I’ll take you on a tour of his website showing how the different pages introduce visitors to this topic, and show what to expect when working with him as a coach.
Happily, Jasper planned well ahead for his author website (my favorite kind of client!), reducing time pressure on him, closer to the book’s publication date. With a carefully coordinated launch campaign, Through the Shadow of Fear made the number 1 spot for bestseller list on Amazon for 4 categories.
Jasper is also making strong use of:
multiple How To articles on his website, containing his reflections, insights, and actionable steps for others
offering a music album (yes, he is multi-talented!), as a companion listening experience
sharing short video clips on Instagram
a free journal and extensive automated email welcome sequence, for new email subscribers.
About the book
Through the Shadow of Fear: Breaking Free from Religious Trauma is a raw memoir-meets-guide for anyone ready to dismantle fear's wiring, from spiritual chains to everyday anxiety.
From the book’s jacket:
If you have encountered religious trauma or any traumatic experience for that matter, or simply cannot stop thinking-feeling patterns of fear, anxiety, shame, or any other unwanted emotion, this book is your helper.
Drawing from personal life experiences and what he later learned from Joe Dispenza's work, Jasper Cove shares his story, how he became programmed to fear, anxiety, and shame at an early age, and how he escaped by reprogramming his nervous system after 40+ years of programming.
This isn't fluffy inspiration, it's the nonlinear truth of turning fear into possibility. Perfect for religious trauma survivors or anyone battling anxiety or negative thought-feeling loops.
Let’s dive in to my conversation with Jasper:
Through the Shadow of Fear combines personal memoir with practical ideas around fear, healing, and transformation. Did you always know you wanted to blend personal story with guidance for readers?
Yes. My inspiration was to share my personal story because stories can be quite relatable to readers as there are often many parallels/mirrors we see in our own lives when we read someone else's story.
The book struck me as deeply vulnerable and covers some truly traumatic experiences. How difficult was the writing process for you?
Writing the book was not difficult at all. I spent 3+ years doing a lot of internal work, so by the time I started writing the book, I was healed. I did break down several times during the process, but it wasn't because of pain, it was because of inspiration. My own story moved me to tears.
What do people typically misunderstand about religious trauma?
A lot of times people don't understand that religious trauma is just as detrimental as any other trauma, in its own way. A set of beliefs that are centered on fear and judgment can wire themselves deep into the nervous system and cause great pain, guilt, and anxiety.
A recurring theme in your writing is the idea that fear can become deeply conditioned over time. When did you first begin thinking about fear as something “wired” into us, rather than simply an emotion to overcome?
I realized it the first time I began to observe my thoughts. I never realized that my "higher yourself" could observe my thoughts. That was when the door began to open to understand that I had been wired a certain way. It became very clear when I read Dr. Joe Dispenza's book Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself.
I noticed you describe the healing process as “nonlinear”. Why was it important for you not to present recovery as tidy or predictable?
Recovery is very messy. Good days. Bad days. Sometimes in succession. Grit and determination, persistence and consistent, those are the key to success. If one can understand that, then on the bad days, they know it's just part of the process. Otherwise discouragement will grab hold, and people give up.
If someone reading this interview feels trapped in shame or fear patterns, what would you want them to know first?
You can change! You can become the new you! If I've done it, you can too!
For your coaching work, you talk about only working with people who are truly “ready” for deep change. What does readiness look like to you now?
Many times, readiness is when we are at the end of our rope. Otherwise we are just looking for something to read, practice, but no change will take place because the grit and determination are absent. Often times, things must be really really bad to make a change.
What has surprised you in your journey to publish Through the Shadow of Fear, and reach readers?
My own story! Most of the story was about the painful life events of how the program took place. And as I wrote, I honestly couldn't believe it because I'm such a different person now.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or goals?
Building my coaching business and I am already working on book 2: I Split Hell Wide Open.
How can readers find out more about you and connect?

Author website spotlight
I had the pleasure of working with Jasper on his website late last year, and it's been wonderful seeing his book move from manuscript to published success. Fun fact: he was finalizing his book cover as we worked together, and we were just in time to create a strong tie in with the visual themes of the cover.
