Using Your Book to Make the World Better

You’re in the majority if you’re pretty worried about the world at the moment. Without naming specific situations, I think most of us can agree, there is a bunch of troubling stuff happening. And a lot of decisions with global consequences, that might bring feelings of dismay and despair.

So, for us bibliophiles, this is a good time to remember, not only can books provide comfort and escapism, they can also provoke thought, offer vital information, and serve as a call to action.

Think about classic titles, like Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl (1947), And the Band Played On (1987), and Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom (1994). None of these authors spent their days posting on LinkedIn or making TikTok videos, but we now associate these books with an upturn in awareness and maybe the start of a cultural shift.

Could your book, in its own way, make the world a better place?

Scroll down to see how my clients Jessica Nordell, Lauren Hall, Rashmi Sirdeshpande, Samuel K. Bentil, James Fadiman, and Jordan Gruber are doing just that.

These days, it’s not enough to simply publish your book and sit back

Even if you land a traditional publishing deal, the book world is littered with authors who are disappointed with how their (resource-constrained) publishers handled book promotion. Today’s savvy authors see that it’s imperative to:

  • Educate themselves on audience-building,

  • Build their own platform,

  • Maximize the book release phase, and then,

  • Dig in for long-term, sustained effort.

One of my favorite books on this topic is Reach: Create the Biggest Possible Audience for Your Message, Book, or Cause by Becky Robinson. It’s packed full of realistic wisdom on what it takes to expand your audience while making a meaningful and enduring difference that has a lasting impact. I’ve given this book to several of my clients.

And since I mentioned building your author platform, naturally I see a solid, strategic, attractive author website as a cornerstone that will support all of your other efforts!

Remember to share the books you find meaningful

Spreading the word about causes you believe in and books you find helpful is a small but effective way to do your bit. Many of us now have a TBR pile that teeters so high, we secretly know we’ll never read everything. Personally, if I hear about a great (nonfiction) book, I now tend to wait to see if it crosses my path again. By the second or third time that someone mentions it, I decide the universe really does want me to pay attention.

So here, it’s my honor to shine a light on a few of my clients with books (either published or upcoming) that have the potential to make the world a kinder, more inclusive, or healthier place.

Insights and tools for tackling bias

Author website, Jessica Nordell

The End of Bias: A Beginning

Winner of several awards, The End of Bias: A Beginning reveals concrete steps we can take to create the cultures, organizations, and communities we all deserve.

This website for author and speaker Jessica Nordell not only showcases the importance of her book and the accolades it has received, but offers in-depth resources, media links, and how to book Jessica as a speaker. Plus there’s a sign-up form to bring readers to her Substack, Who We Are To Each Other. Jessica’s website design and launch was a collaborative project with Charlotte Duckworth Studio.

Engaging with each other and respecting complexity

Author website, Lauren Hall

Radical Moderation

At the time I’m writing this, Radical Moderation is seeking agent representation. I’d be amazed if this doesn’t get picked up in a significant book deal, since its central tenet is that extreme thinking about everything from politics to nutrition to parenting is harming our mental and physical health and driving us apart. Or, to put it another way, we’re suffering from binary whiplash.

The website I created for author Lauren K. Hall shows her expertise on this topic, her writing and academic credentials, helpful resources, and incorporates her latest Substack pieces in a feed on the home page.

Inclusive and educational books for curious younger minds

Children’s books by Rashmi Sirdeshpande

Even if it’s been several decades since you first discovered your love of reading, you’ll know how important it is for younger bookworms (and potential bookworms) to have access to high quality, inclusive, inspiring books. Enter my client Rashmi Sirdeshpande and her impressive collection of titles for young readers. Recently released: Amazing Asia, an encyclopedia showing the incredible history and diversity of this epic continent.

The website I built for Rashmi keeps her books front and center, with information too on how to book her for a school visit or other event. She’s active on Instagram, so a feed in her website footer means there’s always something fresh to entice readers, parents, and educators.

Because “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us”

Avoid Construction Disputes

Attributed to Winston Churchill, the above quote reminds us that the buildings which house our homes, offices, factories, hospitals, schools, and every other facet of life have extensive power over our happiness and wellbeing. And with complex modern construction projects bringing price tags of hundreds of millions of dollars, a lot can go wrong. My client Samuel K. Bentil is an expert on bringing humanity and harmony to the construction industry and his book, Avoid Construction Disputes, is spreading the word.

The author website I created for Samuel showcases his expertise, offers his consulting services, and seeks to engage and grow his audience. Pages for resources, articles, and media appearance underline his credibility in this field.

New possibilities for health, healing, and more

Microdosing Book website

Microdosing for Health, Healing, and Enhanced Performance

Just released, Microdosing for Health, Healing, and Enhanced Performance is a comprehensive and sensible exploration of the ways that tiny doses of plant medicines and similar substances can heal our bodies, nurture our souls, and expand our performance. What struck me most, when I heard co-authors James Fadiman and Jordan Gruber discuss the book, is how the big pharmaceutical companies probably don’t want us to consider this promising option.

Note: this book does not provide medical or legal advice. Readers should speak to their health professional before engaging in any course of microdosing.

The website I created for this book includes events listings, a blog where the co-authors can share new developments, and a confidential way for readers to submit their own microdosing experiences.

I learn something from every client I work with, but it brings me particular satisfaction to help amplify the work of a writer who has untapped potential to make the world a better place

There are probably several more clients I could have featured in this piece. I’ll bring you more examples of inspiring authors I’ve worked with, soon.
